A Story For You to Practise Idiomatic Expressions in Spanish

Learning idiomatic expressions in Spanish is very important in order to sound more organic.

Today I’m going to bring you a piece of my writing, the stories I like to make for Spanish students. As usual, I will write them in English and then translate them into Spanish.

Idiomatic xpressions are highlighted in bold.

A day at the beach

The sun is strong and the waves are crashing hard against the shore. Everyone seems ready to enjoy this piece of nature. The mountains are behind us, waiting for the moon. For the darkness in the middle of nowhere.

I check my bag, I need my glasses. The light is so blinding today. I can hardly see what I have in my handbag, but I hit the nail on the head and take my glasses to the first.

I’m still looking at the people passing in front of me. There are so many stories in every conversation, you could write a book just listening to people talk about their lives.

There are a couple of friends, they are talking loudly. One of them seems to have messed up, he explains the situation. “I thought you wanted to stay longer in the bar… That’s why, we…”

A pair of grannies talking about their little grandchildren. They advise each other: “You know, I’m so happy to have them with me every week, but you have to keep an eye on them every two seconds”. And they laugh together moving all their bodies as they walk along the shore.

I like being here listening to the people, listening to the waves, the birds, seeing the sea at its best. I get so inspired here that it’s a piece of cake to write a story in five minutes.

This beach is the beach of my heart. Before many tourists realise that this is one of the best beaches in the coast everything was like a village. Everyone knew everyone else and you could eat so cheaply everywhere.

Now it costs an arm and a leg to live here.

But this corner of the world will always be special to me, no matter what happens. The image of the seagulls eating all the food they can find on the sand, the high mountains stalking the sea, the ships glittering in the background, it all makes a perfect picture.
